Watermelons and melons, coming from Africa, are currently widely grown in other warm regions around the world, also in Cyprus. Until recently, Cypriot plantations had only local meaning, and the harvest was mostly intended for domestic market. The progress in agricultural technology (creation and development of seedless species), international transport, and especially all quality and taste characteristics of the Cypriot watermelons and melons made foreign recipients interested in them.
In order to extend the period of harvest and the opportunities to apply modern cultivation technologies, watermelons and melons, traditionally grown in Cyprus in the open air, have recently been transferred in majority to greenhouses. Mainly the dessert species of melons with high sugar content are grown in Cyprus.
Watermelons: Crimson Sweet, Sugar Baby, Crisby, Dumama, Paladyn
– Anana type: Polidor, Eden, Sweet Supreme, Sweet Ananas
– Galia type: Galia, Alma, Avava, Dikki, Makdimon
